Cat Care Basics
The essentials every cat owner needs to know — from your first week home to building a lasting routine.
Setting up your home
Before your cat arrives, make sure you have the key items in place. Cats are creatures of habit — a calm, predictable environment helps them settle quickly.
- Litter tray: At least one per cat, plus one extra. Place in a quiet, accessible spot away from food.
- Scratching post: Essential for claw maintenance and territorial marking. Place near sleeping areas.
- Food and water bowls: Ceramic or stainless steel are easiest to keep clean. Keep water away from food.
- A safe hiding spot: Cats need somewhere to retreat. A cardboard box or covered bed works well.
- Cat carrier: Keep it out and accessible so your cat associates it with safety, not just vet trips.
Daily routine
Cats thrive on routine. Try to feed, play, and clean the litter tray at consistent times each day.
Litter tray hygiene
Scoop at least once daily — ideally twice. Cats are fastidious and may start toileting elsewhere if trays are too dirty. Do a full clean and change weekly using a mild unscented cleaner.
Play and enrichment
Even adult cats benefit from 10–15 minutes of active play per day. Wand toys, puzzle feeders, and window perches all help prevent boredom and destructive behaviour. Indoor cats especially need daily stimulation.
Veterinary care
Register with a local vet as soon as possible. Core requirements for most cats include:
- Annual vaccinations (cat flu, feline enteritis, and leukaemia if outdoors)
- Annual health check
- Flea and worm prevention — typically monthly or quarterly
- Microchipping (mandatory in the UK since June 2024)
